What to Expect

ADULT CLASS STRUCTURE

Warm-up movements consist of the cornerstone movements for Jiu Jitsu; hip escapes, penetration steps, running and shuffling, drilling of common movements, and physical conditioning. The warm-up portion of the class is essential for promoting fitness and for students to get used to moving in a completely new way.

Instruction  comes after the warm-up. The instructor will typically show between two and three new techniques per class, with time in between demonstration for students to practice applying the technique with a partner and troubleshooting. Students are encouraged to engage with the instructor in this section: asking questions when they are unclear, or even requesting to review specific curriculum. We strive for a fun and open environment.

Rolling is the live-sparring portion of the class. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a grappling art, which means there is no hitting each other, so sparring can be safely practiced day in and day out. Students are encouraged to ease in to sparring in a way that makes sense for them. If you want to sit just watch, that's okay.

CHILDREN’S CLASSES

Children's classes are structured in the same manner as as adult classes with a few slight variations. First, children's classes are a bit shorter - they are one 50 minutes long. This is because young children oftentimes have shorter attention spans, and expecting a young child to sustain concentration for 90 minutes is simply not practical. Second, the children's class will place additional emphasis on the martial arts culture of respect, courtesy, and tradition. The goal is to empower children through self defense AND produce good social outcomes.

Finally, the children's classes will typically include a game or activity to keep the session fun.
