Frequently Asked Questions

  • Side-by-side comparison of martial arts training; left side shows a black and white photo of a man practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, wearing a gi and gripping a ball, looking focused; right side shows a woman standing over a seated man, both in gis, practicing grappling techniques in a gym with a brick wall and training posters, with the woman instructing and both engaged in training. Yellow text labels read 'Gi' on the left and 'No Gi' on the right.

    What is "Gi" and "Nogi"?

Gi is pronounced “ghee”. Gi classes are in the kimono top and bottom secured with belt. In this form of the sport, you utilize the grips on the fabric of your opponent’s gi and belt for different moves both offensively and defensively.

NoGi refers to not wearing the gi. Typically, you wear athletic pants or shorts without pockets or metal. For a top, a rash guard or sleeved shirt without buttons, pockets, or metal. This form of the sport is closer to wrestling as their are no grips allowed on the fabric of clothing.

  • A man sitting cross-legged on a martial arts mat with the back to the camera, wearing a white gi with a Captiol Jiu Jitsu emblem. Several people are around him, with some standing and others seated, inside a martial arts gym.
